God Can Use Dark Times for Good

We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair. We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed.”

2 Corinthians 4:8-9 (NLT)

None of us are exempt from suffering, loneliness, discouragement, or unjust criticism. Why?

Because those are things Jesus experienced, and we need to experience them too for God to develop the character of Christ in us.

Does this mean God causes tragedies? No. God is good, and he will not cause evil or do evil. But God can use dark and stressful times like these for good. He can use our current troubles to teach us to trust him, to show us how to help others, and to draw us closer to other believers.

The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 4:8-9, “We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair. We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed” (NLT).

So, what should you do when you’re going through difficult times?

First, refuse to be discouraged. Then, remember God is with you. Finally, rely on God’s protection and guidance.

The Truth About Shadows

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

Psalm 23:4 (ESV)

One of the common sources of stress is loss. You can lose your job, your health, your money, your reputation, or a loved one. And the coronavirus pandemic is most likely amplifying the stress.

When people go through loss, there are two common reactions. One is fear, and the other is grief. Grief is good. Grief is the way we get through the transitions of life. In fact, if you don’t grieve, you get stuck! Grief will not kill you if you let it out.

Fear, on the other hand, can be a bad thing. Not once in the Bible does it say, “Grieve not,” “Sorrow not,” “Weep not,” or “Cry not.” What it does say is “Fear not.” And it says that 365 times! Because grief doesn’t paralyze us, but fear does.

In Psalm 23:4, David says, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me” (ESV).

David knew shepherds always carried a rod and a staff to protect their sheep. And he knew God had the power to protect him. So David trusted God, even in the darkest valleys.

We’re collectively going through a dark valley right now, and we can choose to trust God—even in the shadows, where it doesn’t make sense and when it can seem like a long way out of the valley.

But, here’s the good news to remember about big, scary shadows. You can’t have a shadow without light. If you see a shadow, that means there is a light shining nearby.

So the key when you’re going through the valley of the shadow is to turn your back on the shadow and look at the light. Because as long as you keep your eyes on the light—Jesus, the Light of the World—the shadow won’t scare you.

Just like David, trust God in the dark valleys, and pray, “When I am overwhelmed, you alone know the way I should turn” (Psalm 142:3 NLT).

I am Omizu Joyce Jabofo with Admin no 1524627, have been an employee
of Union bank until I received a purported letter of Termination dated
the 19th day of April 2013.

Moreover, I was employed in to Union bank on the 20th of February 2006
and posted to the Warri Main Market Branch Office and was later
transferred to the Enerhen road branch when I had carrying out my
duties with every sense of humour according to the ethics of the bank
with care.

Furthermore, I was going my about my normal routine in the Enerhen
road branch when my manager sent a Co- staff to call me and I was
given a strange letter of termination.

I reacted and asked what did I do to deserve this, he replied by
saying my service is no longer required. The letter dated 19th April.
I TAGGED IT FAKE because my name was fraught with so many
irregularities ranging from the letter Head to the signature therein.

Attached are the documents for references purpose.

Besides, I never received any email or correspondence from the Head
office to commemorate the purported letter of termination as which is
the usual custom of Union Bank.

Note: Another thing that amazed me was the statement/ comment my
manager Mr. Nwachukwu Charles made is another thing that beats my
imagination. I quote; I actually rejected the letter at Zonal Office
Asaba and ask them why this lady should be treated this way because
she is a hard working staff. This statement/comment was made the
moment I was given the letter of termination by my manager in his
office. Furthermore, on the 13th of October 2015 I received a text
message from Union Bank crediting my account 0016825036 with the
customary 13th month salary as usual for all staff of Union Bank.

It was then, it beckoned on me that there is a foul play somewhere.
Because there is no way the bank will terminate one’s employment and
pay such after 2 years of exit from the said bank, Union Bank to be
precise.

Hence, I concluded that the said letter did not originate from the
Head Office coupled with the trend of events, the irregularities and
inconsistence in signature as well as the 13th month salary.

In the same vein, I decided to pay a visit to Head Office, Lagos on
the July, 2016 to clarify if this letter of termination originated
from Head Office. My intention was to see the GM. General Manager &
the HR. Head of Human Resources but I was deprived from seeing them, I


only saw some other staffs who categorically told me that the letter
originate from Head Office but I was not convinced left and came back.
In fact I was their twice all my effort proof abortive. Is on this
note I want the media to come into this matter to unravel everything

about this issue for justice to prevail. In fact, because of this same
matter I have lost 2 pregnancies.

Worry Doesn’t Solve Anything

Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?”

Matthew 6:25 (NIV)

Worry is essentially a control issue. It’s trying to control the uncontrollable. We can’t control the economy, so we worry about the economy. We can’t control our children, so we worry about our children. We can’t control the future, so we worry about the future.

But worry never solves anything! It’s stewing without doing.

Jesus actually gives four reasons you don’t need to worry in his Sermon on the Mount.

1. Worry is unreasonable.Matthew 6:25 says, “Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?” (NIV).

Jesus is saying, if it’s not going to last, don’t worry about it. To worry about something you can change is foolish. To worry about something you can’t change is useless. Either way, it’s unreasonable to worry.

2. Worry is unnatural.Jesus gives us an illustration from nature in Matthew 6:26: “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?” (NIV).

There’s only one thing in all of God’s creation that worries: human beings. We’re the only things God has created that don’t trust him, and God says this is unnatural.

3. Worry is unhelpful.It doesn’t change anything. Matthew 6:27 says, “Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” (NIV). When you worry about a problem, it doesn’t bring you one inch closer to the solution. It’s like sitting in a rocking chair—a lot of activity, energy, and motion, but no progress. Worry doesn’t change anything except you. It makes you miserable!

4. Worry is unnecessary.Matthew 6:30 says, “If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?” (NIV). If you trust in God, you don’t need to worry. Why? Because he has promised to take care of all your needs: “God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19 NIV).

That includes your bills, relational conflicts, dreams, goals, ambitions, and health issues you don’t know what to do with. God will meet all your needs in Christ.

Don’t worry about it!

• Think of something you’ve been worrying about. What is an action step you can take instead of worrying?
• How does prayer help keep you from worrying?

God offers you salvation. And today is the day to accept it.

When you say, “Not yet,” you’re actually saying “no” to Christ. The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 6:2, “Right now God is ready to welcome you. Today he is ready to save you” (TLB).

How do you accept salvation? You turn from yourself to God. You trust Christ to come into your life, forgive your sins, and make you who he wants you to be.

If you’re ready to accept God’s salvation, you can pray a prayer like this: “Jesus, I want to know you personally. Thank you for dying on the cross for my sins. I open the door of my life and receive you as my Savior and Lord. Thank you for forgiving me of my sins and giving me eternal life. Take control of my life. Make me the kind of person you want me to be.
